Latte vs cappuccino: what actually differs
Same espresso, different milk. The real ratios, how each drink is built, and how to make both properly on a home machine.

A latte and a cappuccino start identically — the same shot of espresso — and differ entirely in what happens to the milk. A cappuccino is roughly equal parts espresso, steamed milk and thick foam. A latte is espresso with far more steamed milk and only a thin layer of microfoam on top. That is the whole difference, and everything else follows from it.

The classic Italian cappuccino formula is one-third, one-third, one-third, served in a 5 to 6 ounce cup. A latte in the same espresso dose but a 10 ounce cup is simply a much milkier drink, which is why a cappuccino tastes noticeably stronger even though both may contain exactly the same amount of coffee.
The milk is the whole story
Steaming milk does two things at once: it heats it, and it injects air. How much air you introduce, and how well you fold it in, decides which drink you can make.
For a cappuccinoyou aerate longer — a few seconds of the tip sitting just under the surface, hissing air in — so you build a thick, stiff foam that sits on top and holds its shape. That foam is what gives a cappuccino its light, airy character, and it is why a cappuccino feels lighter in the hand than its size suggests.
For a latte you aerate briefly, then submerge the tip and spin the milk into a whirlpool that breaks every bubble down until the milk is glossy and paint-like. That is microfoam: it pours as a liquid rather than sitting as a cap, it integrates into the drink, and it is what makes latte art possible.
In both cases stop at 140–150°F. Past roughly 160°F the milk proteins that hold foam structure start to break down, the foam collapses and the milk tastes scalded. Full guidance on the hardware side is in espresso machines with milk frothers.
Where the other drinks sit
Flat white:smaller than a latte (typically 5–6 oz) with the same microfoam, so the coffee is more prominent and the texture is silkier. Essentially a small, strong latte.
Macchiato:an espresso “marked” with a small spoon of foam — almost entirely coffee. (The large, syrupy caramel macchiato sold by chains is a different drink entirely.)
Cortado: espresso with an equal amount of warm milk and almost no foam, usually 4 oz total. The choice for someone who wants milk to soften the shot without diluting it much.
Mocha: a latte with chocolate added.
Americano:espresso and hot water, no milk — not part of this family at all, though it is often confused with a latte by people new to the menu.
Caffeine and calories
Caffeine is identical if the espresso dose is identical.A single-shot latte and a single-shot cappuccino both carry roughly 63mg of caffeine; a double of either carries roughly 126mg. Milk contributes nothing. The common belief that a cappuccino is “stronger” is about taste concentration, not caffeine.
Calories differ, because milk volume differs.A cappuccino contains meaningfully less milk than a latte of the same nominal size, since a third of its volume is air. A 6oz whole-milk cappuccino sits around 80–110 calories; a 12oz whole-milk latte is usually closer to 180–220. Skim or plant milks change that, and any syrup changes it much more.
Making both at home
You need three things: an espresso machine with a steam wand or automatic frother, a pitcher sized to the drink, and cold whole milk. The pitcher size matters more than people expect — fill to just below the spout base, which means a 12oz pitcher for a single latte, not the 20oz one that looks professional and lets milk go cold before it textures.
Pull the shot first and steam immediately, because espresso deteriorates as it sits. Steam, then tap the pitcher on the counter to pop large bubbles and swirl it until the milk looks like wet paint. For a cappuccino, pour the milk in and spoon the thicker foam over the top; for a latte, pour steadily from height to let the milk go under, then drop the pitcher close to the surface at the end to float the microfoam and make a pattern.

Which should you order?
Order a cappuccino if you want to taste the coffee, prefer a smaller drink, or like a distinctly foamy texture. Order a latte if you want something long, mild and creamy, or if you are drinking a coffee you find too intense on its own. If you want the coffee to lead but still want a proper milk drink, a flat white or a cortado is usually the better answer than either.
