Tamp & Pour: the accessories that actually change the shot

Tampers, milk pitchers, scales and the small tools that quietly fix your espresso — ranked on fit and feel, with live prices and honest 'you don't need this' calls.

This is the hub the site is named for: Tamp (pressing the grounds level and firm) and Pour (steaming and pouring the milk) are the two hand skills that separate a good home shot from a mediocre one, and both are helped by a few cheap, well-chosen tools. But accessories are also where coffee spending goes to die, so the first job of every page here is to tell you what you can safely skip. You need three things and they are all inexpensive: a tamper that actually matches your portafilter diameter (a 58mm tamper in a 54mm Breville basket will never give you a level puck, and that mismatch alone ruins more home shots than any bean), a milk pitcher sized to your cup (a 12oz pitcher for a single latte, not the 20oz one that looks impressive and steams cold before the foam forms), and — the one upgrade that genuinely levels up your consistency — a scale that reads to 0.1g so you can weigh your dose in and your shot out instead of guessing. Everything beyond that is optional and honestly assessed here as such. A distribution (WDT) tool and a dosing funnel make dialing in easier and are worth the $15 if you are chasing straight shots; they are pointless if you make milk drinks. A knock box is a convenience, not a requirement. A bottomless portafilter is a diagnostic tool that shows you exactly where your puck prep is failing — brilliant for learning, unnecessary once you have learned. The through-line on every roundup below is fit and feel over flash: an accessory either measurably improves the cup (a scale, a correctly-sized tamper) or it does not, and we tell you which is which, with a live price on the ones worth buying and a plain note on the ones that are not.
