How to descale an espresso machine

Scale is the most common cause of a machine that quietly gets worse without ever breaking. The full routine, the right schedule, and why vinegar is a false economy.

Limescale is what happens when hard water meets a heating element. Calcium and magnesium dissolved in the water come out of solution as the water heats, and they deposit on the hottest surfaces first: the boiler wall, the heating element, the narrow tubes carrying water to the group head. Nothing dramatic happens. The machine keeps working. It simply becomes worse at the one job that decides how your coffee tastes.

Here is the mechanism that matters. Scale is a thermal insulator. A coated heating element has to work harder to transfer the same heat into the water, so the machine either runs cooler at the puck or takes longer to recover between shots. Brewing below the correct temperature produces under-extracted coffee — sour, thin, hollow — which is exactly the complaint people take to forums and blame on their beans. Meanwhile the narrowing tubes reduce flow, the solenoid valve on machines that have one gets sticky, and eventually something seizes.

Descaling is the routine that reverses it, and it is the highest-value twenty minutes you will spend on your machine all year.

Always follow your manufacturer’s published schedule and product guidance where it exists, because some machines have specific procedures and some warranties are explicit about descaling agents. Many modern machines count shots and prompt you, which is more accurate than a calendar because it tracks actual water throughput.

Descaling is not backflushing — they solve different problems

These get confused constantly and they are unrelated jobs. Backflushing uses a blind (unperforated) basket and an espresso machine detergent to force water backwards through the group head, clearing coffee oils from the shower screen and the three-way valve. It addresses coffee residue, it is a weekly job on a machine used daily, and it only works on machines with a three-way solenoid valve. Descalinguses an acid solution run through the whole water path to dissolve mineral deposits. It addresses water residue and it is a quarterly job. Doing one does not substitute for the other — a machine can have a spotless group head and a boiler full of scale.

The routine, step by step

1. Read the manual first. Some machines have an automatic descaling cycle and some do not; some have specific instructions about the steam wand; a few explicitly void warranty on certain agents. Five minutes here saves an expensive mistake.

2. Empty and clean the machine. Remove the portafilter, take out the water filter cartridge if you have one (descaler will exhaust it), empty the drip tray, and empty the reservoir.

3. Mix the solution to the stated dilution.Use the ratio on the descaler packaging — more is not better, and an over-strong solution is harder on seals. Fill the reservoir.

4. Run it through the group head. With no portafilter fitted, run roughly a third of the reservoir through the group, in bursts if your machine does not have a continuous setting. Discard what comes out.

5. Run it through the steam wand and hot water tap. This is the step most people skip, and the steam path is where scale does the most damage because it runs hottest. Open the steam valve and let solution pass through for several seconds, then repeat with the hot water outlet if you have one.

6. Let it sit.Leave the remaining solution in the machine for the time the product specifies — typically fifteen to thirty minutes. Descaling acids dissolve calcium carbonate over time, not instantly.

7. Flush thoroughly, then flush again. Empty the reservoir, rinse it, fill with clean water, and run at least two full reservoirs through both the group and the steam wand. Residual descaler tastes metallic and sour and will ruin several shots. If in doubt, run another tank.

8. Fit a new water filter and pull a throwaway shot. The first shot after descaling is almost always odd. Pull it, taste it, bin it, and start fresh.

Why not vinegar?

It is the most common home remedy and it is a false economy. Vinegar is acetic acid, which does dissolve scale, but it has three problems in an espresso machine. It is aggressive toward rubber seals, gaskets and some metals over repeated use, and gaskets are the parts that fail on these machines. It leaves an odor and a taste that takes many liters of flushing to clear, and people rarely flush enough. And several manufacturers specifically exclude vinegar damage from warranty coverage. Signs you have left it too long

Coffee that has gradually got more sour over months, without any change in beans or grind. Longer warm-up times. A shot that takes noticeably longer to start flowing. Weak or spluttering steam. Water flowing more slowly from the group than it used to. Visible white crust around the steam tip or in the drip tray. Prevention: treat the water going in

Descaling removes scale; better water stops it forming. The Specialty Coffee Association targets water around 150 ppm total dissolved solids with calcium hardness between roughly 50 and 175 ppm, and staying in or below that band dramatically slows deposition. An in-tank charcoal-and-resin filter helps and is the lowest-effort option; a zero-TDS pitcher plus mineral packets gives you full control. Pod and drip machines need this too

Everything above applies to Keurig, Nespresso, and automatic drip machines, which are all small water heaters with narrow tubes. Pod machines in particular are notorious for brewing progressively cooler as scale builds, and “my Keurig makes weak coffee now” is nearly always a descaling issue rather than a pod issue. How often should I descale my espresso machine?
Every three months on typical municipal water, every four to eight weeks on hard water, and up to every six months if your water is soft or filtered. If your machine prompts you, follow the prompt — it counts actual usage rather than days.
Can I use vinegar to descale an espresso machine?
You can, and we would not. Vinegar is harsh on gaskets and seals over repeated use, leaves a taste that takes a great deal of flushing to clear, and is excluded from some warranties. A proper descaler includes corrosion inhibitors and costs a few dollars per use.
What is the difference between descaling and backflushing?

What happens if you never descale?

Do I need to descale if I use filtered water?
Yes, just less often. Filters slow scale formation rather than eliminating it, and an exhausted filter does nothing while looking exactly like a fresh one. Extend the interval, do not abandon the job.
How do I know if my machine has scale?
Coffee that has drifted sour over months with no other change, longer warm-up, slower flow, weak steam, or white crust around the steam tip. Any of those on a machine you have not descaled recently is scale until proven otherwise.
Should I descale a new machine?
Not immediately, but start the schedule from day one rather than waiting for a symptom. Descaling is preventative maintenance; by the time you can taste the problem, the deposit has been building for months.
