Pressurized vs non-pressurized portafilters
One basket makes the resistance for you; the other makes you earn it. This single spec explains why cheap machines produce fake crema and why a better grinder does nothing for them.

If you have ever wondered why a $120 espresso machine produces a thick head of foam from supermarket pre-ground coffee while a $2,000 machine produces a sad trickle from the same bag, the answer is the basket, not the machine. It is the least-discussed and most consequential component in home espresso, and understanding it changes what you buy and what you expect.
Espresso needs resistance. Pushing water through loose coffee produces weak brown water; the coffee has to fight back so the water is forced to work through it, which is what dissolves enough material to make a concentrated, syrupy shot. There are exactly two ways to create that resistance, and each defines a category of machine.
How each basket works
A non-pressurized basket— also called single-wall, precision, or simply a proper basket — is a metal cup with dozens or hundreds of fine holes across its floor. Water can leave freely through all of them, so the only thing standing in its way is the coffee. That means the puck itself must supply the resistance, which in turn means your grind size, your dose and your tamp are what decide how the shot flows. Get them right and you get real espresso. Get them wrong and you get a gusher or a choke, immediately and obviously.
A pressurized basket— also called dual-wall or crema-enhancing — adds a second chamber underneath with a single tiny exit hole. The coffee sits above the first layer, the brewed liquid collects in the chamber between, and it can only escape through that one pinhole. The pinhole, not the puck, is now creating the back-pressure. Because the resistance is built into the hardware, almost any grind produces a slow, foamy pour that looks like a good shot.
Why that changes the drink
The visible difference is the crema. Real crema is an emulsion of coffee oils and dissolved carbon dioxide, formed when pressurized water forces its way through fine coffee — it is dense, tan, and it sits for a minute or two. The foam a pressurized basket produces is mostly aeration: liquid squeezed through a pinhole into open air, whipping in bubbles on the way. It looks similar for about thirty seconds and then collapses, and it is paler and soapier in texture.
The invisible difference matters more. In a pressurized basket, the flow rate is set by a hole in a piece of metal, so your grinder can barely influence it. That is a feature when you are starting out — it means a cheap grinder cannot ruin your coffee — and a ceiling forever after, because it also means a better grinder cannot improve it. This is the honest reason we tell people not to buy a $300 grinder for a $120 machine.
How to tell which one you have
Take the basket out of the portafilter and turn it over. A non-pressurized basket looks like a fine metal sieve from both sides: you can see light through many holes. A pressurized basket has a smooth underside with one small hole, sometimes covered by a plastic or rubber disc that pops out for cleaning. If the basket is two pieces that separate, it is pressurized. Another giveaway: if a machine advertises “perfect crema from any coffee, even pre-ground,” it ships pressurized.

The middle row is the useful one. Breville ships both baskets in the box, and a great many owners never realize they have been using the pressurized one for two years. If you own a Barista Express or a Bambinoand have a decent grinder, switching to the single-wall basket is the cheapest upgrade available to you — it costs nothing and it is already in your drawer.
Should you switch?
Switch to non-pressurized if you have a burr grinder that goes genuinely espresso-fine with small, repeatable adjustments, and you are willing to spend a week dialing in. The reward is real: a shot whose flavor you control, that responds to changes, and that improves as your technique does.
Stay pressurized if you use pre-ground coffee, if your grinder is a blade grinder or a coarse stepped burr grinder, or if you mostly make milk drinks and simply want them to taste fine with no fuss. There is no shame in this. A latte made through a pressurized basket is a perfectly good drink, and a badly dialed non-pressurized shot is genuinely worse than a competent pressurized one.
Do not switch as a first step on a cheap machine. Without stable brew temperature and with a modest pump, a $120 machine asked to behave like a $600 one will mostly produce frustration. If you have outgrown the pressurized basket, the honest upgrade is the machine — see machines under $500.
What a non-pressurized basket demands from you
Four things, and none of them is optional once the basket stops helping. A grind you can adjust finely, because the whole shot now hinges on it — see espresso grinders. A dose weighed rather than guessed, with a 0.1g scale, because dose changes resistance as much as grind does. Even distribution before tamping, which is what a WDT tool is for and why it matters far more on a single-wall basket. And a tamper that matches your basket diameter, because an undersized tamper leaves a ring of loose coffee at the wall for water to run straight down.
If that list sounds like work, it is — that is the trade the two baskets represent. One hands you a decent result and keeps the ceiling low. The other hands you nothing and removes the ceiling entirely.
Precision baskets, and whether they are worth it
Once you are on non-pressurized baskets, an upgrade path exists: precision baskets from manufacturers such as IMS or Normcore, machined with tighter hole tolerances and more even hole distribution than a stock basket. The claim is more even extraction across the puck, and it is a modest, real improvement for someone already doing everything else right. It is emphatically not a fix for channeling or a bad grinder, and it is the last thing on the list, not the first.
